Storm roof damage in Ireland: what to expect and what to do first

Atlantic storms are part of life in Ireland, and every winter brings named storms that test roofs to their limit. Wind gets under slates and lifts them, strips and breaks ridge tiles, tears lead and flashing away from chimneys, punctures and peels flat roofs, and rips fascia, soffit and guttering off the eaves. Driving rain then finds every gap, so the first sign of storm damage is often a leak or a damp patch on a ceiling, sometimes a good distance from where the water is actually getting in.

The damage is worst on exposed and coastal homes, on older natural slate roofs, and on farm buildings and sheds where large, exposed sheeting takes the full force of the wind. A roof that has not been checked in years is far more likely to lose a loose slate or a tired flashing in a storm than one kept in good order.

The order of priorities after a storm is always the same: make the roof safe and stop the water getting in with a temporary make-safe, photograph the damage for your insurance, then arrange the permanent repair with a written quote. This page brings it all together, the recent big storms and their aftermath, how to prepare your roof for the next one, and the fastest way to get a rated local roofer to your door.
